Chika Amalaha Tested Positive Because She Drank ‘Zobo’ - Coach

Treasurer of Nigeria Weighlifting Coaches Association, Andrew Ekanem has revealed that Chika Amalaha, who was stripped of her gold medal after testing positive to a banned substance at the just concluded Commonwealth Games, might have allegedly got the prohibited substance from her consistent drinking of a local drink called ‘Zobo’

Amalaha, 16, who won the women’s 53kg competition, provided positive “A” and “B” samples that contained prohibited diuretics and masking agents and had to be stripped of the medal she won. Ekanem believes she was the architect of her own misfortune by drinking ‘zobo’. Ekanem said on Brila FM early today that Amalaha had been warned several times against drinking ‘Zobo’, but all the entreaties fell on deaf ears.

The couple, who refused to reveal their surnames, spent their lives trying to find their respective mothers, who were both called Maria, and had both abandoned their children when they were still babies.

But neither could have imagined that the women they had both been searching for could have been the same person. Continue…

Adriana, a cosmetics saleswoman, hadn’t seen her estranged mother since she was one year old, leaving her to be raised by the her father. Meanwhile, truck driver Leandro, who was brought up by his stepmother, knew his mother had also abandoned him in his hometown of Sao Paulo when he was eight years old.

While Leandro remained in the city, Adriana left their hometown to work as a housemaid, married for 15 years and had three children.

Ebola: US Not Sending Experimental Drug To Africa Yet – Obama

US President Barack Obama said it was too soon to send experimental drugs for the treatment of Ebola to West Africa, which has been hardest hit by the deadly outbreak.
Obama on Wednesday said affected countries should instead focus on building a “strong public infrastructure,” adding: “I think we have to let the science guide us. And I don’t think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful.”
The decision to use an experimental drug to treat two Americans infected with Ebola, while nearly 1,000 Africans have already died from the deadly epidemic, has sparked controversy.

Saudi Arabia Suspends Hajj Visas For Ebola Hit Countries

The Embassy of Saudi Arabia suspended visas of 7,200 pilgrims from three African countries — Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia — as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the disease among the pilgrims during the forthcoming Haj season.
Mohammad Al-Homoud, charge d’affaires at the Saudi Embassy in the Guinean capital Conakry, said the decision to suspend the visas was issued some time back.

“The governments in these countries were very much understanding of the decision, which aims mainly to boost prevention measures against the spread of the virus because the second wave of it has already kicked off,” added Al-Homoud.
He said these countries also want to make sure its citizens are free of the virus, adding: “The fact that the virus is still spreading compels us to continue the suspension of visas for this Haj season.”

The talks between the Saudi Embassy in Conakry and the governments of these countries started four months ago.
Meanwhile, Saudi Ambassador in Guinea Amjad Bedaiwi told local media that the Kingdom has put a condition that the suspension of visas will be reviewed only after World Health Organization (WHO) issues a clear cut statement that citizens in these countries are allowed to travel for Haj.
Bedaiwi said the embassy extensively discussed the issue with the Guinean government, an Islamic state, where the number of its pilgrims comes to nearly 7,000 as against 400 others from both Sierra Leone and Liberia.

On the other hand, Jeddah health department issued strict directions to air and sea borders’ outlets to enhance its procedures and prevent the coming of the Ebola virus-infected pilgrims.

An official source at Jeddah health department stated that the measures involve monitoring the epidemic in general and checking all the incoming passengers from the neighboring African countries that recorded cases of the disease to ensure that no one with a case of infection with the virus enters the Kingdom.

Dr. Khalid Obaid Bawaked, assistant director of Public Health Department in Jeddah, said the measures will ensure that the virus will not enter the country.

“The Ebola virus is a very dangerous disease once its first symptoms appear. The precautionary measures and the enforcement of the strict health conditions are very important, mainly because of the forthcoming Haj season where the guests of God come from all around the world,” said Bawaked.

“The Ebola hemorrhagic fever caused by the virus is one of the most known lethal diseases,” he said, adding that the virus was first discovered in 1976 in a tropical district to the west of Sudan, near Zaire (now called the Democratic Republic of Congo).
But the virus did not record any case outside middle and east Africa. There are five strains of the virus — Bundibugyo, Ebola-Cote d’Ivoire, Ebola-Reston, and the Ebola-Zaire and Sudan.

The virus enters the body by touching the body fluids of an infected patient, such as his blood or the other fluids. The virus can be transmitted also to humans when dealing with wild animals carrying the virus such as chimpanzees, gorillas, monkeys, antelopes and fruits’ bats, whether sick or dead.

Up till now, there is neither an effective qualitative cure for the disease nor vaccine. The treatment is generally limited to providing supportive care.

Severe conditions of the disease require the provision of intensive supportive care for patients who often suffer from dehydration, and badly need the administration of fluids using solutions containing electrolytes.

And because there is no effective cure or vaccine for the prevention or treatment of the disease up till this very day, precautionary and preventive measures are the only way to limit cases of infection and deaths among people.

WHO recently said death cases as a result of the Ebola virus in Africa had increased to 887 deaths. The WHO statement added that there are 1,603 cases of infection with the virus in four west African states, of which there are 485 cases in Guinea, 468 in Liberia, 646 in Sierra Leone and 4 in Nigeria.

Genevieve Nnaji Lesbian Saga Has Affected Me ––Actress Ella

The story that actress/musician, Ella Martins and Genevieve Nnaji, are lesbian partners was actually broken by an online magazine last year and it created a big buzz. Though both Ella Martins and Geneiveve swiftly reacted to squash it all but it would seem the echoes are still being heard as Ella revealed in this chat that she is still being haunted by the scandal. Here's what she told Potpourri about the saga:

You became popular in Nigeria after that allegation of lesbianism between you and Genevieve. How did that little scandal affect you and your career?
Yes, it has affected my emotional life, because everybody now believes I am in a relationship with Genny and  my family is not happy about it. It has really affected my career and image at home.

What actually happened between you and Genny that sparked the allegation?
Hmm, you know I speak more of French than English, so, it is a little hard for me to express myself fully. What happened is that Genny and I were in a club in Lagos and her phone got missing. Later, I think a paparazzi or someone got hold of it and started sharing some contents about me and Genny online. I don’t see anything abnormal in the pictures but people started talking that we must be lesbians and all.

What kind of pictures are you talking about?
As normal persons and friends, we do take normal pictures at home and in other places but I don’t know why the online magazine showed Genevieve and I kissing, I am surprised and don’t know where they got those pictures from.

So, you and Genevieve were never kissing each other in any pictures you took together?
We kissed, but it was nothing extraordinary, it was normal kiss between girls. I mean girls do kiss each other normally, even guys do too. When I was dating Fally Ipupa we used to kiss and now that we are separated and are good friends we still continue kissing like we used to. My fear is I receive strange calls saying that in a few days’ time they will be releasing more pictures about us.

You still received calls over the incident?
I am a very popular figure in my country and a lot of people are jealous of me. So many of them would like to see me go down and this may be a good excuse for them to start something.

When they call you on phone, do they ask for anything or sound like blackmailers?
No, just to say they will expose our dirty secret and I don’t have any dirty secret.

If you have no dirty secret why are you now scared?
You don’t understand, even the pictures they released online was worked on, adulterated to make it look different from the actual pictures. We kissed as normal girls, not as romantically or sexually as they projected in the pictures posted online.

What is the relationship between you and Genevieve Nnaji?
We have been good friends since 2004. We met when Kennis Music organised an award and since then we have been good friends. We talk often and whenever I am in Lagos we meet up and have fun as friends. I have had no peace since the pictures leaked online. Everybody now calls me Genny’s wife back home.

Sincerely, are you and Genevieve Nnaji sexually involved?
No, never. I am neither a lesbian nor is Genevieve. We are just two close friends, showing profound emotions for each other by kissing.

It seems the Beninoise actress is staying away from Genny these days to avoid further speculations.

Fight At Foursquare Church In Lagos Over Plot To Arrest Pastor

The dispute between the Headquarters of Foursquare Gospel Church and one of its parishes has deepened. It took fresh twist on Sunday when policemen from Zone 2, Onikan, Lagos, stormed Livingspring Tabernacle in Ikorodu on the outskirts of the state, to arrest its senior pastor, Rev. Isaac Adeyemi.

The policemen acting on instructions from the church’s board of directors had on Saturday gone to Adeyemi’s house to arrest him, but picked up his 25-year-old son, Peter, when they didn’t meet their target.

They repeated the visit on Sunday, at the church’s premises, but met a brick wall in their attempt to take away the pastor. They were accompanied by officials from the church’s headquarters in a white coaster bus.

9 Quick and Effective Ways to Make Your Man Smile after a Hard Day

1254376
Bad days happen to everybody from time to time and it is an honored duty of every woman to make her man smile and help ease the stress. As men come back home they all want peace and comfort to restore the powers. We are to cheer them up and drag a smile out of them. When the situation is more serious than you`ve expected my advice is to combine a few methods in order to ease the strain. Here are some tried and effective ideas for you to use.

1. Be his support

In those days when it seems that everything goes wrong he needs your support. Talk to him, make him believe in himself and to try once again, inspire him to try something new and not to give up. Your support and belief in him are like a healing balm for your man. Having you on his side he will remove mountains. Hearing your incentive words he will not only forget his troubles and smile but also will be charged with positive attitude for the next day.

2. Make him talk it out

As a rule most men are not eager to talk about their problems, it is like complaining for them. But anyway he must know that you are there for him to hear him out. Don`t push but show that you care. As the guy has his heart swelled with hurt and anger he shouldn`t keep it inside. As soon as he relieves his feelings you`ll see him smile immediately.

3. Give him a long greeting kiss

After an evening phone conversation you can instinctively guess that your man not the best day out of all. So here is an option. Kiss him tenderly and sensually and passionately as he comes in and make him leave all the troubles at the back of the front door. I`m sure you`ll see a sweet tender and sexy smile slowly appearing on his face and his eyes starting to sparkle.

4. Cook his favorite meal

Do you know what his favorite meal is? Yes? Great! Take all the ingredients and start preparing. The moment he comes in and smells his favorite meal cooking he will understand that you care for him. It will lift his spirits in no time. There is a certain sense in the phrase “a hungry man is an angry man”. A peaceful dinner after a hard day is exactly what will make him smile.

5. Give him a massage

After a day full of stress and tension the best way for him to relax is to lie down and receive a long and sensual massage made by his beloved. A mixture of tender touching and caress are exactly what he needs. You will receive a grateful smile in return which is exactly what we need. After such a massage he will be enjoying a balmy sleep.

6. Embrace him

Of course you should kiss and hug your guy not only when he has bad days, isn`t it? But when he looks for your concern your embrace is needed extremely. Sometimes no words are appropriate and guys are rather sensitive beings who need a shoulder to lean on more that we think. A tight embrace might take all his worries away and a sunny smile will show up on his face.

7. Take him out

The best way to get away of problems he has is to change the scenery, to go out of house. Plan an unusual evening, take the situation into your hands. I`m sure he will be glad to have some rest from making decisions and to have you in charge. Choose to go to his favorite restaurants, go to play bowling or watch a film of his beloved genre. Any idea will go, just make sure that he`ll love it and it will be a good way to be distracted.

8. Be a tease

Nothing can be better than when you meet your man in a sexy outfit, teasing and flirting, after he had a bad day. It is a great way to distract him and to make all the problems go away. Passion and desire is exactly what you both need especially if intimacy has receded into the background because of being extremely busy. Show some creativity and imagination to become closer to each other and to revive your deep feelings.

9. Compliment him

When our strength is failing us we need our partner to cheer us up with pleasant words. As couples live together for some time they forget to tell each other how much they love and adore the partner. Tell him what a beautiful person he is and how you admire him. It is such a trifle but hearing a compliment will enhance his self-confidence and let him know that he is perfect for you. Men also want to feel loved and cared for.
Being in a relationship means taking up responsibility for another person. So when our beloved have had a terrible day it is our duty to support them and make all their problems go away. Anything you invent will go because it is just between you two. What do you usually do to bring his smile back on his face?

You Can Win Elections By Luck, But You Cannot Rule By Luck, Kwankwaso Tells Jonathan

Posted by: nick on August 4, 2014

Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has said Nigeria needs strong leadership to overcome its security challenges and not someone who relies on luck to rule.
“What the President must realise is that nobody can run a country by luck. You can win election by luck, but you cannot be lucky all the time. So Goodluck as his name implies should look beyond luck in handling the affairs of this country. What Nigeria requires is a strong leadership that will stop all this nonsense or in the alternative, negotiate from the point of strength with the insurgents,” Kwankwaso said.
Kwankwaso said this yesterday, while speaking with reporters at his office. He advised the presidency to reduce the level of hatred and bitterness among Nigerians, if the government was actually interested in resolving the problem of insecurity.
According to him, the real cause of insecurity in the country is bad leadership being experienced in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) -led government, noting that the inability of President Jonathan to tackle the issue of insurgency in the North and insecurity in other parts of the country has exposed Jonathan’s incompetence to preside over the affairs of Nigeria.
“Now, they are just using propaganda. Look at the issue of the abduction of Chibok girls. The schoolgirls have been in captivity and they kept arguing —where are the names, who are they, where are the photographs; they didn’t believe that over 200 children were abducted. Haba! Even if it is 20 tortoise or goats! Won’t you look for them? One of the reasons I love this country is that we have people of integrity in all the regions, in all the states like my former colleague, former Minister of Education, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili.
“This is somebody who worked at the World Bank, but now she has devoted her time to the cause of these girls. She is not from this part of the country, but she felt she had to take the bull by the horns and that is what we are seeing in developed countries — fight injustice, save people, help them, if you have the opportunity to do so. They sent some hawks to go and stop the protesters. The other day, I went to Abuja, I saw an advertisement, while Ezekwesili was saying ‘BringBackOurGirls’, some people were saying ‘vote for us, we want to stay and maintain the status quo; look at my photograph, I am smiling.’ And they don’t know time is of essence.
“At the moment, the country is in a critical situation, and if this madness is not stopped and if it is allowed to degenerate, and becomes the order of the day, whereby innocent people are being killed every day, then something is wrong with the leadership.
“What Nigeria requires now is a strong leadership that can effectively tackle the insurgency in the North-East, and other topical security challenges,” he said.
Kwankwaso then suggested that one major way to restore normalcy in the northern part of the country was to draw out a Marshal Plan for the region, and urged Jonathan to stamp his feet as the Commander –In-Chief of the Armed Forces, to tackle this security issue.
The governor challenged the President to think seriously about the statement made by General T.Y Danjuma, (rtd), who suggested that President Jonathan lead Nigerians to Sambisa Forest to rescue the abducted Chibok girls. [Vanguard]

Boko Haram Desperate To Bomb S’East, Warns Igbo Leaders

Igbo Leaders have urged the Federal Government to ensure ‘desperate attempts’ by Boko Haram insurgents to bomb the South-East does not materialise, warning that a successful attack in the region portended grave danger for the country.
In a statement by Evang. Elliot Uko, Deputy Secretary of the Igbo Leaders of Thought (ILT), entitled ‘The calm before the storm’, the tribal leaders described as worrisome the Sallah day arrest in Borno State of a long trailer laden with bombs and IED’s disguised as cattle merchants headed for Onitsha and Port Harcourt.
“This simply tells us that those who are committed to bombing the east are very serious at their plans,” the statement said.
“We have two choices facing us. One is to keep quiet and look the other way until it happens. The other is exactly what we are doing now: Raise our voice in warning, praying and hoping that this avoidable catastrophe would pass us by. Truth is that Boko Haram is desperate to bomb eastern Nigeria. We don’t want that to happen because the implications are clearly frightening.

Suspected Fulani Herdsmen Kill One In Kaduna Church Invasion

Boko Haram Threatens To Attack Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Government said yesterday that there are threats by insurgents to bomb designated markets, churches and public places in the state.
Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah, in a statement, said the threats were contained in “text messages from a terrorist group, Boko Haram threatening the peace and security of the state.”
The Commissioner therefore advised members of the public to be security conscious and be extra vigilant by promptly reporting suspicious movements of strange elements that constitute security threats to security personnel for action.
Umanah however assured all indigenes and residents of the state of their safety as government has already directed security agencies to step up surveillance to tackle the threat as well as ensure the safety and security of lives and property including sensitive and important installations.
In the same vein, Umanah urged all law abiding citizens to go about their legitimate businesses as government was on top of the situation, maintaining that government was poised to sustain the peace and stable environment which made Akwa Ibom a safe haven for visitors, investors and her indigenes.

Mortician Arrested Over Stolen Corpse In Enugu

The mortician in-charge of the Christ Specialist Hospital, Enugu from where the corpse of Chief Theodore Ezeobi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, was reportedly stolen last Thursday morning has been arrested by the State Police Command.
Some unknown persons were said to have broken into the mortuary and forcefully removed the corpse of the legal practitioner who passed on four months ago.
The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed to Vanguard that the mortician on duty when the corpse was stolen, was already being interrogated with a view to ascertaining how the corpse disappeared from the morgue.
“It is a true story that the corpse of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria from Anambra State disappeared from a hospital in Enugu and we are investigating the matter now.
“The mortician on duty that morning is in our custody and he is helping us in our investigations,” he said.
However, Vanguard learnt that the corpse may have been taken somewhere in Anambra State for the burial which was scheduled for last Thursday.
The funeral, which was well advertised was, however, aborted as security operatives were said to have stormed the village in search of those in possession of the controversial corpse.
Sources said the first son to the deceased, Theodore Junior Ezeobi, had placed a newspaper advertorial in which he fixed wake keep and the burial of his late father for last Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
But reports from the village said the wake keep did not hold Wednesday night though several canopies were set for the event at the family compound.
It was gathered that while the son was planning the funeral in line with the earlier announcement, the daughter of the deceased legal luminary, Chinelo Ezeobi, placed a counter announcement, a development that gave the villagers and the deceased lawyer’s friends and associates the impression that the family was in dispute.
The burial posters for the late SAN which was also signed by Theodore Junior for the family, was displayed in some locations within the town, including St. Theresa’s Catholic Church where a burial mass was billed to be held in his honour.
Chief Ezeobi hailed from Osikwu village, Awgbu, in Orumba North local government area of Anambra State.

Mourinho blames referee for Bremen humble

Chelsea’s manager Jose Mourinho has pointed fingers at the referee Harm Osmers, that officiated the pre-season friendly between the Blues and German side Werde Bremen.

The former Real Madrid’s boss feels the referee was unfair with his decisions and perceives his officiating as a ”Circus” to impress the home supporters.
Speaking after the game, he said:

“I learned nothing from this game,” the Portuguese told reporters. “Our expectations are not fulfilled because, when we decided to have this match here in Bremen, we thought about an evolution in difficulty.
“We were expecting a fast game, a competitive game, but we come here and the referee thought this was a circus for Bremen fans – for them to have fun – and he killed the match.
“This game, for us, would have been perfect. I like the Werder Bremen team – they are fast, intense and they defend with a lot of people.
“The opponent is perfect for us to compete today but we couldn’t play.”
Chelsea lost the game by 3 un-replied goals.

Wife Set Her Husband On Fire For Rapping Her 7-Year-Old Daughter

gas1n-1-web-624x825

A Washington State woman set her husband on fire for molesting his very own step daughter. The husband is currently facing charges for molestation.
The incident took place on the 17th of July, when Vincent Phillips was pushed in gasoline and set on fire by his wife Tatanysha Hedman.
According to recent reports, after the man was set on fire, he sped off in his car to find the nearest convenience store. He ran inside the building and started screaming for help.
“I’m on fire!” Phillips reportedly screamed to the people in the store. “Help me!”
When the ambulance and police showed up, the husband told them his wife set him on fire. As soon as he told them he fell to the ground and passed all the way out. When the police showed up to the house they arrested Hedman.
She immediately told them the reason she lit him on fire was of the horrible fact he defiled her seven-year-old daughter. He happens to be her stepfather and not her biological father. Hedman continued to tell the police that she rather set him on fire because shooting him would have been way too nice.
The husband is currently in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, but as soon as he gets out he will be charged with first-degree child molestation. His wife is currently in jail on assault and arson charges, the woman is being held on $500,000 bail.

3 Difficult Marriage Conversations You Can’t Ignore, and 6 Ways to Initiate Them

Posted by: tunde on August 4, 2014

dreamstimecomp_197173561
Let’s face it. There’s no way to avoid having a difficult marriage conversation at any given time throughout your marriage. And while things like finances, communication, and spirituality, are high on the list of hot topics to discuss regularly in your marriage, there are some topics that most don’t even want to think about or confront. But a real marriage requires real communication. You can’t work through your differences or be clear about each others’ needs and wants through e-mails, text messages or Facebook messenger. No, difficult marriage conversations require you to speak to each other directly.
Recently, hubby and I had a rare moment where we were watching TV, and three conversations came out of watching one show. Here are 3 difficult marriage conversations you can’t ignore.
1. Advance directives & living wills- God forbid something happens to you or your spouse that leaves either dependent on life support and feeding from tubes for the rest of their life, or in need of extensive medical treatment. Do you know what decision your spouse would want you to make in that difficult moment? No one ever wants to think of the worst. But, being clear about what each of you wants would make a difficult process a little more manageable with clear direction and wishes.
2. s*xual likes and dislikes- Just as we grow in the person we become over time and throughout marriage, it’s likely that what we liked five years ago, we may not be too interested in now. But guess what? We’ll never know if we’re not having the conversation and asking the question. Make time to check in regularly when it comes to your s*xual interests. But make sure you’re realistic and sensitive to your spouse’s wants, needs and perspective.
3. Marriage goals- This may sound a little crazy, at first, but when was the last time you sat down with your spouse to go over your life goals together? What do you see in your future? Where do you want your family to be in the next 1, 3, 5 or 10 years from now? Have you broken down your goals into categories that you can work on together (i.e. finances, health, parenting, leisure, career or business)? Talking about your marriage dreams and goals and how you can work on them together will go a long way.
How to initiate a difficult conversation:
1. Acknowledge your spouse’s feelings. Understand that you may not agree or fully comprehend what your spouse is feeling. But that shouldn’t stop you from attempting to view the situation from their standpoint.
2. Set clear goals & action steps. Make sure that you’re clear on your desired final outcome. What is the purpose of the conversation and what are you hoping to gain from it? Answering this question ahead of time will help you to approach the topic with heart and not attitude.
3. Show appreciation & encouragement. Regardless of how difficult the topic is, you should always go into the conversation making sure you encourage your spouse and express your appreciation and love for them. Loving affirmation is a great way to relieve a little tension and make sure you are always playing on the same team.
4. Be mindful of timing. Trying to squeeze in a difficult conversation in between soccer practice or making dinner is probably not the best option. Instead, let your spouse know you have to speak to them about something and want to make sure you are both free to chat without distractions. The last thing you want is to have to end it in the middle of a heated discussion and before you’re able to resolve anything.
5. Listen attentively and repeat back what you understand. I’ve heard of this technique many times, most recently shared during the BMWK Marriage Cruise. Many times we listen with the intent to battle back or to defend whatever it is we think needs defending. But if you’re forced to repeat back what your spouse is saying and what you understand, that leaves very little room for misunderstandings. It forces you to really listen to what they are saying.
6. Put your ego away. When it comes to communicating with your spouse effectively, there is no room for ego. It took me a while to come to grips with the fact that I’m not always right (as shocking as it was). But I learned that it’s not always about me (and contrary to what you may believe, it’s not always about you either). The more I let go of my ego, the easier it is to have these difficult conversations.

Woman Uses Own Child To Steal s*x Toys From Store

Misty-Ann-Lee
This woman, Misty Ann Lee, did the most last Friday at a Spencer’s gift shop. Lee was charged for allegedly trying to steal a vibrator from the store by placing it behind her child in a stroller.
The Spencer’s Manager reported to police that she watched Lee as she was stealing the toy. Once she confronted the thief, Lee allegedly “had no idea what she was talking about.” As soon as the manager pulls the toy out of her stroller, Lee takes her child and storms out of the store…for now. After the woman got caught she decided to return to the store! By then, the store manager already had police to her arrest.
If you got caught why would you return to the same store moments later? Ladies set an example for your child!

What are Antibiotics? Are they Safe?

You hear about them every time you visit a doctor, but do you really know what they mean and how they function? Antibiotics basically tackle infections caused by various bacteria and parasites, excluding flu and viral fevers. Doctors always emphasize on completing the entire course of antibiotics to avoid resistance caused by the bacteria.
Now each antibiotic works against a specific bacteria type. The types of antibiotics primarily include:
(via)
  • Penicillins – for example, penicillin V, flucloxacillin, and amoxicillin.
  • Cephalosporins – for example, cefaclor, cefadroxil, cefalexin.
  • Tetracyclines – for example, tetracycline, doxycycline, and minocycline.
  • Aminoglycosides – for example, gentamicin, amikacin, and tobramycin.
  • Macrolides – for example, erythromycin, azithromycin, and clarithromycin.
  • Clindamycin.
  • Sulfonamides and trimethoprim – for example, co-trimoxazole.
  • Metronidazole and tinidazole.
  • Quinolones – for example, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and norfloxacin.

The main function of antibiotics is to destroy the bacteria or parasite by prying into the cell walls and also limiting the reproduction of bacteria in the body.
When you take an antibiotic, there is a fight between the effect of the drug and your immune system. Therefore, the longer the bacteria survives, the likelier it is that it will become resistant to the drugs.
In a bid to kill the infection, one has to make sure all the bacteria causing the infection is killed. If you do not take the prescribed medication doze, then the bacteria might show in someplace else, which can be deadly.
Side effects of antibiotics
The most common side effects of antibiotics are nausea, vomiting, upset stomach or loose motions. On rare occasions, one may have allergic reactions to certain antibiotics. Furthermore, persistent usage of antibiotics can lead to the destruction of good bacteria in the bowel, which in turn will result in the growth of bad bacteria.
Here are a few side effects of antibiotics, which may require medical attention:
  • Clostridium difficile infection – Watery loose motions and cramps in the stomach
  • Allergic reaction – Rashes on the skin, swelling of the lips, swelling of the face or tongue, nausea, breathlessness.
  • Vaginal itching or discharge
  • Severe vomiting
  • White patches on the tongue
Antibiotics when combined with other medication, can hamper the effectiveness of other treatments. So, it is best to inform your doctor about all the medicines that you are taking before starting an antibiotic course.

Nigerian history 101: The story of Overami, former king of Benin

It wouldn't hurt to know a bit of your history. Read about the King who ruled Benin from 1888-1897
Ovonramwen Nogbaisi (ruled 1888–1897), also called Overami, was the Oba (king) of the Kingdom of Benin up until the British punitive expedition of 1897.
At the end of the 19th century, the Kingdom of Benin had managed to retain its independence and the Oba exercised a monopoly over trade which the British found irksome. The territory was coveted by an influential group of investors for its rich natural resources such as palm-oil, rubber and ivory.

LASG visits Synagogue over Ebola Virus

The Lagos State Government and some federal delegates on Sunday paid a visit to the General Overseer of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, Prophet Temitope Joshua.

The visit was said to be aimed at sensitising the church and its membership on the menace of the deadly Ebola virus.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, who led the delegation, said it was also to make sure that no victim of the virus came into the church from any of the affected countries.

Idris said, “We have our strategies that we intend to share with you. Again, we need to know the resources you have here because whether it is one or two cases, if they are allowed to get out, it is a major problem. We are here to work together on how to contain this disease.”

Idris said the delegation decided to pay the visit to the SCOAN because of the recognition that it was an international Christian centre whose congregation comprised people from all over the world, including the countries of the West African sub-Region which had already been infected by the Ebola disease.

The Director, Centre for Disease Control, Professor Abdulsalami Nasidi, added that the visit was also to inform the Synagogue leader of the deadliness of the Ebola Virus, and ensure that it did not escape into the country.

Prophet Joshua, in his reaction, promised to work with government.

One of such measures, he said, was to visit any of the countries, rather than allow their residents come into Nigeria.

He also promised to suspend some of his major Church healing programmes for a few weeks adding, “I am ready to work with you. I love my country and I will be ready to work with you. Even if it is a rumour, there is need to secure our environment to ensure that it is safe.”
