BENIN—THE All Progresives Congress, APC,
in Edo State, says it has no ill feelings over the defection of Senator Ehigie
Uzamere to Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, noting that his action has been
handed over to God and the gods of Benin Kingdom.
However, the chairman of PDP in the state, Chief
Dan Orbih, welcomed the defection, saying it was a reaction to what he termed
the failure of the APC-led government in the state.
“It is a reaction to the failure of Adams
Oshiomhole’s government to develop Edo
State. It is the worst
government we have had in the history of the state with his policy of
demolition of houses, all in the name of expansion of existing roads and
primitive tax policy. The PDP is now repositioned and will create level playing
field for all members,” he said
Meanwhile, the Forum of former Council chairmen
in Edo South senatorial district, led by Mr Crosby Eribo, has described the
defection of Senator Uzamere as betrayal and ingratitude, adding that “it is a
lesson to Governor Adams Oshiomhole and other APC leaders in future elections
because it seems pretenders are sometimes rated higher than those who are
dedicated to the party.”
Recall that Senator Uzamere, representing
Edo South senatorial district in the Senate, defected to the then ACN from PDP
in 2011 and was handed the ACN senatorial ticket at the expense of Mr Matthew
Urhoghide, the current Publicity Secretary of PDP. Even after his candidacy was
opposed by the old ACN members, Governor Oshiomhole campaigned vigorously for
him after he convinced other leaders of the party to accept Uzamere.
Following the support of the Oshiomhole political
machinery, Uzamere defeated Senator Daisy Danjuma of PDP.
Reacting to his defection, APC Publicity
Secretary, Mr Godwin Erhahon, said: “We wish him goodluck in his political
merry go round. We have no ill feelings towards him. We will continue to trust
in God and depend on the judgment of our people. Our victorious train sails on
towards the presidential villa with robust hope.
“That mandate was given to him by the people, but
since he decided to sell it to PDP, we leave him with God and the gods of our
land.”
On his part, Mr Matthew Urhoghide, the Publicity
Secretary of the state PDP, welcomed the development, saying that he has no
personal issues with Uzamere who took the APC Senate ticket from him in 2011.
